Circumferential backlash measuring instrument made by FRENCO

Outsourcing and relocation of jobs are nowadays commonplace within the German machine building industry. However, there are also very different trends, for example Frenco GmbH from Altdorf near Nuremburg. The specialist for gear and spline measuring instruments, whose piece-production is very successful here in Germany, focuses on its head start in experience and its desire to continuously improve. With this in mind Frenco has added another product to its range and has started to produce the circumferential backlash measuring instrument themselves. The reason for this turnaround is mainly that the circumferential backlash measuring instruments supplied by third parties were not able to meet the stringent quality standards laid down by Frenco.

Circumferential backlash measuring instruments are used to measure splines, with its measuring methods laid down in the standards ANSI B92.1 and ISO 4156 as a special measuring method. The measuring result provides information on the possible backlash of the meshed splines (in their as new condition).

The design of the circumferential backlash measuring instruments was completely revised and optimized by Frenco. The result is very good: the user benefits from the easy and precise handling of the measuring instrument. For example the direct measurement value can be read from the dial indicator using a special probing method. This avoids converting the measuring value ratios, as is commonly the way with many other manufacturers’ instruments. This eases the handling and ensures more precise measuring results.

The measuring instrument is delivered with both a setting and inspection arbor. The setting arbor is used to set up the instrument and the inspection arbor is used to check the function of the instrument and the dial gage. This reduces the time and effort to monitor and maintain the instrument.
Possible damage on the teeth of the measuring instrument which, if not identified, inevitably lead to erroneous measurements, can be detected quickly by using the inspection arbor,.

As part of the service and support for its customer, Frenco also supplies a detailed information brochure with the measuring instrument. In it not only are the use and evaluation of the measuring instrument and result explained, but also how to convert the measuring result to the actual and effective spline tolerances.

In case of further information or training requirements, the specialists at Frenco GmbH offer application-orientated courses on the subject of gears, as e.g. on standards (DIN, ISO and ANSI), tolerances, operating modes of the gear measuring instruments and efficient process control of gear manufacture.
