Spline gauges

Spline gauges are go and no-go plug gauges for splines. They are used as a quick inspection method for splines with involute, straight-sided and serration flanks.
The most important feature when inspecting splines is its usability– which is tested with spline gauges. The spline gauges are designed according to the tolerances ‘actual’ and ‘effective’.

According to DIN 5480 and other popular spline standards, go gauges are most important when inspecting the tolerance 'effective'.

The price for spline gauges includes the creation of a complete gauge drawing and an inspection certificate of the new gauge from the FRENCO inspection laboratory (both of which are also available as a document files).

Materials:
Spline gauges are available in chrome steel, powder metallurgy high speed steel ASP and high-alloy powder metallurgy high speed steel HX.

 Material
 Description  HRc  Life span
(relating to LS)
  CS
 Chrome steel  60-62 100%
SX  Low-alloy powder metallurgy high speed steel ASP 23  63-65 225%
HX  High-alloy powder metallurgy high speed steel  64-66 750%

Wear resistance of spline gauges is determined by the alloying constituents chromium and vanadium, and by the hardness of the material. The intervals of wear tests complies with the wear resistance, which means that highly wear resistant materials allow considerably longer inspection intervals, which in return more than compensates for the often higher manufacturing costs of the tools.

Wear test:
Spline gauges are subject to wear during use. To this end a wear tolerance with an allowable wear limit of the worn dimension has been designed. Gauges have to be scrapped as soon as this wear limit is reached.

The estimated life span is used as a basis for the monitoring pattern and is expressed in the number of workpiece inspections carried out:

  • after 25% of the estimated life span: size check over / between pins.
  • after 50% of the estimated life span: size check + additional inspection of the individual form deviations.
As a reference, monitoring intervals of spline gauges, depending on the material, is shown in the table below.
